The Dhammapada story of Erakapatta the Naga King. On one occasion, while residing near Baranasi the Buddha spoke about Erakapatta, a king of nagas. In one of his past existences during the time of Kassapa Buddha, the naga had been a bhikkhu, he had accidentally caused a grass blade to be broken off while travelling in a boat on the Ganga river. The monk had failed to do the act of exoneration as prescribed. As he thought it was a minor offence. After death, he was reborn as the naga. He was waiting the appearance of a Buddha for asking for help. On seeing the Buddha, Erakapatta related to the story of his previous life. After hearing him, the Buddha told the naga that “Your Majesty, to be a human being is very difficult; the appearance of the Buddhas and to listen to the Buddha’s preaching are also very difficult as well. These three things are difficult to achieve for a person”. Colophon: Folio 25 on the recto side: Chunlasangkatrasa 196 (corresponding with CS 1196), a kap sanga year, the second day of the waning moon of the tenth lunar month, the sixth day of the week (Friday), a kat hao day, the writing was accomplished at the time of thae kai kham (between 15.00-16.30 o’clock). Chao Maha Khanan Phutthavongsa had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Lam thammapattha, to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May wishes and desires come true. May this be a condition for us to reach Nibbāna. Amen, amen. I rejoice!.
