Quilmes [1920s-1940s]

Description: This is a handmade envelope with three stationary envelope plus loose material. The documents consist of, mainly, photos, newspapers' and magazines' articles and clippings, engravings, and original documents on the town and then city of Quilmes, one of the oldest in the province of Buenos Aires. It is also the capital of the administrative district of the same name. Its name was given by the indigenous population Kilmes who were resettled there from the far away Argentine province of Tucumán in the 17th century. They walked the more than 1000 km and most of them died before arriving to Buenos Aires. By the end of the 18th century, the administrative district of Magadalena was divided in three parishes. One of them was Quilmes that, by the end of that century, also became an independent administrative district (or Partido) on its own right. In 1916, Quilmes became a city.
