Batismos, 1872-1926

This volume contains baptismal records of children born to enslaved women after the passage of Law 2040/1871, the "Free Womb" Law, and registered in the Church of São Sebastião de Itaipu, Niterói-RJ. Entries date from 09 Feb 1872 to 18 Feb 1926. The opening and closing charters were signed by the Secretary of the Government of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, Joaquim Mattoso Duque Estrada Camara, on 01 May 1872. Entries were signed by the following clergy: José de Castro e Silva; and (?) Gassaldi. A copy of the "Free Womb Law" can be found in the beginning of the volume, followed by a copy of the "Golden Law," Law 3.353/1888 that ended slavery in Brazil. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 198 numbered folios. It has a cover and is in good overall condition. Dimensions: 33cm X 22.5cm.
