Batismos de Livres, 1872-1888

This volume contains baptismal records of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of Law 2040/1871, the "Free Womb" Law (Lei do Ventre Livre) and registered in the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Jurujuba, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. The entries date from 14 Jan 1872 through 04 Apr 1888. The opening and closing charters were signed by the Secretary of the Government of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, Joaquim Mattoso Duque Estrada Camara, on 01 May 1872. Priest Venancio Lins Telles Barreto signed the records. On folio 29v, the "Golden Law" ("Lei Áurea") that ended slavery in Brazil dated 04 Nov 1890 is transcribed and signed by Canon João Aureliano Correia dos Santos. Following this, the remaining folios in the volume are blank. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 198 numbered folios.
