Batismos, 1872-1901

This volume contains baptismal records of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of Law 2.040 of 28 Sep 1871 (the "Free Womb" Law) and registered in the Church of São Gonçalo do Amarante between 21 May 1872 and 02 Jan 1901. The opening and closing charters are dated 01 May 1872 and were signed by the Secretary of the Government of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, João Mattoso Duque Estrada, who also paginated all of the folios of the volume. The entries are out of chronological order and were signed by Vicar João Ferreira Goulart. On folio 125v, there is a list documenting funds received in the treasuries of "Sacramento," "Almas," "Rozario," "São Gonçalo," and "Amparo.". Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 198 numbered folios in a good state of conservation. It has a cover. Dimensions: 32cm x 23cm.
