Batismos de Escravos, 1872-1885

The volume records baptisms of enslaved people registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, Saquarema-RJ. Entries date from 25 Aug 1872 to 8 Dec 1885, beginning on folio 11. There are no opening or closing charters. The entries record whether the enslaved was a "domestic/house worker" ("serviço da casa/doméstico") or agricultural worker ("serviço da roça/rural"); in some entries, the word "property" is used instead of "slave." There is a record of an emancipation at the baptismal font (alforria de pia) on folio 169f. A pastoral visit by Francisco, Bishop of Petrópolis, was recorded on 19 Jun 1898. The following clergy signed the entries: Raphael Teixr.a (Teixeira) de Az.do (Azevedo) M.do (Machado), Manoel Joaquim Henrique de Azevedo Farias, Raphael Capobianco, Rufino José Alvares, and Jacintho Messias Peixoto. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 176 numbered folios. It has no cover; some of the folios have been damaged by ink and insects and folios 1-10, 19, 40, and 80 are missing.
