Óbitos de Forros e Livres, 1840-1845

The volume records burials of freed and free people registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo de Maricá, Maricá-RJ, dating from 20 Sep 1840 to 12 May 1845. There are no opening or closing charters. The following clergy signed the entries: Vicar José Faustino Gomes da Santana, coadjutor; and Commissioned Vicar José Antonio Pacheco. There are burial records of Ensign (Alferes) Antonio Ribeiro; Captain Boaventura Ferreira Maciel, surgeon Antonio José Pereira; and Major José Ferreira Gomes, among others. A few burials of enslaved individuals were also recorded in the volume; following their transcription, "They are not valid because the book is incompetent" ("Não vale por ser em livro incompetente") is written. African ethnonyms mentioned: Congo. The cause of death is recorded in many cases, as is the material condition of the decedent (e.g. "poor"). There are some burial records of children abandoned at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 27 numbered, nonsequential folios. The volume is incomplete and does not have a cover; some of the folios have come loose and there are some holes caused by insects. Dimensions: : 30cm X 19.5cm.
