Casamentos de Forros e Livres, 1844-1867

The volume records marriages of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Rio Bonito. Entries date from 26 Jan 1844 through 14 Sep 1867. The opening and closing charters were signed by Francisco Xavier Cavalcanti Albuquerque on 08 Nov 1851. The following clergy signed the entries:Vicar Tito Pereira de Carvalho, Commissioned Vicar Manoel João Catarino, and Vicar Virtulino Bezerra Cavalcante. The betrothed parties include Portuguese individuals; freed people (forros) whose parents remained enslaved; freed people who were formerly slaves of Major Ignacio Rangel de Marins Couto, Lieutenant Vicente José Marinho, and Lieutenant João Pedroza Braga; and a freed woman who was "freed at the baptismal font" (liberta de pia), on fl 95f. The marriages recorded in this volume were celebrated in a number of locations, including the oratory of the fazenda do Tanguá, the chapel of Rio Seco, and the Chapel of Santa Anna, a parish affilitated with the mother church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Rio Bonito. Physical characteristics: The volume is comprised of 241 numbered, sequential folios without a cover. The folios have partially come loose from the binding; the volume has been damged by insects and the original ink used. Dimensions: 31cm x 21cm.
