On one occasion, while residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha spoke to monks about the kings of mara and preached this sermon. At one time, there were many kings of mara who transformed themselves into elephants and harassed Rahula Thera. But Rahula Thera was not afraid and shocked at all. The Buddha knew that all those elephants are mara (devils). Thus, the Buddha spoke to the mara that even if you are in the number of one hundred, you could not make my son afraid. Because my son regularly is not frightened. He is free from passion and he has great diligence and wisdom. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat thousand hundred 96 (corresponding with CS 1196), a kap sanga year, the third day of the waxing moon of the third lunar month, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), the writing was accomplished at the time of thiang vang (between 10.30-12.00 o’clock). Sathu Maha Phutthavongsa Viriyapannya from Vat Phonsaiyaramathipadi had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Thammabot, to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May my wishes and desires come true. May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna.
