The Dhammapada story of Kapila the Fish. During the time of Kassapa Buddha, there were two brothers joined together the Buddhist order. The older brother named Venerable Sothana and younger brother named Venerable Kapila. After ordination, Venerable Sothana obtainined a subject of meditation from his preceptor went to the forest to meditate. He attained arahatship. But Venerable Kapila was very learned in the Pitaka. Because of his great learning he gained much fame and many followes. He also became very conceited and was full of contempt for other bhikkhus. What is suitable, the Venerable Kapila said it was not appropriate. The part that is not suitable, the Venerable said that it was appropriate. For this evil deed, Kapila had to suffer in niraya between the time of Kassapa Buddha and Gotama Buddha. Later, he was reborn as a fish in the Aciravati River. That fish, as mentioned above, had a very beautiful golden body, but his mouth had a very horrid, offensive smell. Colophon: Folio 25 on the recto side: Sangkat thousand hundred 96 (corresponding with CS 1196), a kap sanga year, the third day of the waxing moon of the third lunar month, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), the writing was accomplished at the time of thiang vang (between 10.30-12.00 o’clock). Sathu Maha Phutthavongsa Viriyapannya from Vat Phonsaiyaramathipadi had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Thammabot, to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May my wishes and desires come true. May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna.
