Police Magistrate Records 15 Feb 1839-10 Jan 1840

The volume contains cases brought before the Police Magistrate at the Police Office at Freetown. The volume includes information on the date of the case, the name of the Police Magistrate who heard the case, the name of the person charged, on what grounds and the sentence given. Cases relate to minor offences. The length of information provided varies from three lines to several pages. The reports sometimes include the names and accounts of the Police Constable and of some witnesses. The first pages of the volume contain an index of twenty-four letters with the number of the letter, the date, the sender, the subject and how the case was disposed. The volume is bound in blue cloth boards. The ink is faded on some pages, and there are some traces of damage from iron gall.
