Police Magistrate Records 27 Sep 1870-14 Feb 1871

The volume contains cases brought before the Police Magistrate at the Police Office in Freetown between 27 September 1870 and 14 February 1871. It contains an alphabetical index that lists cases by the name of the defendant, and provides information on the offence and the page number in the volume. The volume includes the date of the case, the name of the Police Magistrate who heard the case, the name of the person charged, the offence, and whether the defendant confessed to the crime. It also includes information on whether the case was dismissed, or the sentence given. Reports of cases sometimes include the accounts of the plaintiff and defendant, of the Police Constable and of some witnesses. The volume is bound in blue cloth boards. There is extensive water damage, and damage from iron gall. The bottom corner of the pages is breaking away. Some pages are torn and have been mended with tape.
