Bahía Blanca [1900-1960s]

Description: This handmade envelope contains eight stationary envelopes with photos, engravings, bibliographic references, original documents, plus newspapers’ and magazines’ articles and clippings that informs us of Bahía Blanca, a town, and then city, that was founded in 1828 as a fort against the local indigenous population who were trying to return to their land where they had lived for thousands of years. In the 19th century, the first immigrants arrived from Italy and Basque in the 1830s. Later on, a British colony started to breed sheep and cultivate wheat in 1868. The arrival of the train-- the Southern Railway—took place, first, in 1884, and second, in 1922 when the Railway Rosario to Puerto Belgrano connected Bahia Blanca with Buenos Aires, Rosario, and the rest of the Argentine interior.
