Sòng khao padapdin: the rewards derived from the rice adorned the ground. On one occasion, the Buddha was residing at the Jetavana monastery. At the time, Venerable Maha Moggallana travelled to hells he saw the hell creatures suffering, being hungry, and crying. The Venerable asked the door keeper, “When will these hell creatures be free from suffering? The keeper replied, “On the dark moon day of the ninth month, the prince of devils will open the doors and let the creatures to receive merit from their relatives”. They then will be free from suffering. When returning to the human world, the Venerable went to the Buddha and reported the Buddha what he saw in the hells. The Buddha said that among those hell creatures, some of them have their relatives and some do not have any relatives. On the dark moon day of the ninth month the prince of devils lets the creatures go out to receive merit from their relatives. If their relatives make merit with khao padapdin and dedicate the results of the merit to them, they then will be free from suffering. Colophons: (1) Folio 5 on the recto side: Sangkat one thousand 3 hundred and 2 (corresponding with CS 1302), a kot si year, on the tenth day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month, the third day of the week (Tuesday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng vat (between 15.00–16.30 o’clock). Phikkhu Nanthapannya from Vat Xiang Yün had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Sòng Khao Padapdin (Rewards derived from the donation of alms-food on occasion of the Khao Padapdin Festival), to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvana, constantly and certainly, the greatest bliss. Khanan Ditsapannya is the scribe. May I rejoice with the merit. (2) Folio 6 on the verso side: Sangkat (CS) 1283, a huang hao year, on the fourth day of the waning moon of the third lunar month, a kap nyi day, the fourth day of the week (Wednesday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng ngai (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock).
