The content tells about the story of Venerable Revata who was the younger brother of Venerable Sariputta and the son of a Brahmin named Vamganta and Sali in the village Nalanda in Magadha. When Revata was seven years old, his parent arranged marriage in order to not want him to become ordained. As Revata saw the bride he was about to marry, he became bored and thought of going ascetic. Therefore he fled to the residence of monk who was in the forest and asked for the ordination from him. When the monk found out that he was the brother of Venerable Sariputta, he accepted him and arranged for him to be ordained immediately. After becoming a novice, Revata learned meditation from his preceptor. He then left his preceptor to practice meditation in the forest for three months and attained arahantship. Later on, he was given a new name as Venerable Revata Khadiravaniya Thera, the foremost on living in the forest.
