At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jetavana monastery of Savatthi. When the night was far spent, a certain deity whose surpassing splendor illuminated the entire Jetavana monastery came to the presence of the Buddha and after drawing near, respectfully saluted the Buddha and stood to one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Buddha in verses: many are the deities and men, yearning after good, have pondered on blessings. Pray, tell me the supreme blessings are. Therafter, the Buddha preached a sermon about the thirty-eight blessings. The blessings start: Not to associate with fools, to associate with the wise, and honouring those worthy of honour, this is the supreme blessing, and end: Though touched by worldly circumstances, never his mind is waving, sorrowless, stainless and secure, this is the supreme blessing. Colophon: Folio 7 on the veso side: Small letters are not so beautiful. Please consider carefully, dear monks, dear novices. May I share the merit with those who use [this manuscript] for learning or preaching. My name is Rattanapannyasa who wrote this manuscript.
