On one occasion, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jetavana monastery of Savatthi. When the night was far spent, a certain deity whose surpassing splendor illuminated the entire Jetavana monastery came to the presence of the Buddha and after drawing near, respectfully saluted the Buddha and stood to one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Buddha in verses: many are the deities and men, yearning after good, have pondered on blessings. Pray, tell me the supreme blessings are. Therafter, the Buddha preached a sermon about the thirty-eight blessings. The blessings start: Not to associate with fools, to associate with the wise, and honouring those worthy of honour, this is the supreme blessing, and end: Though touched by worldly circumstances, never his mind is waving, sorrowless, stainless and secure, this is the supreme blessing. Colophon: Folio 9 on the recto side: Sangkatrasa (CS) 1255, a ka sai year, on the eighth day of the waning moon of the first lunar month, Sunday, the writing was accomplished at the time of thiang van (between 10.30–12.00 o’clock). Thao (Mr) Ngao had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Mangkhalasut (Mangala Sutta) to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May my wishes and desires come true. Nibbāna paccayo hontu no (May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvana).
