At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jetavana monastery of Savatthi. When the night was far spent, a certain deity whose surpassing splendor illuminated the entire Jetavana monastery came to the presence of the Buddha and after drawing near, respectfully saluted the Buddha and stood to one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Buddha in verses: many are the deities and men, yearning after good, have pondered on blessings. Pray, tell me the supreme blessings are. Therafter, the Buddha preached a sermon about the thirty-eight blessings. The blessings start: Not to associate with fools, to associate with the wise, and honouring those worthy of honour, this is the supreme blessing, and end: Though touched by worldly circumstances, never his mind is waving, sorrowless, stainless and secure, this is the supreme blessing. Colophon: Folio 11 on the recto side: In Buddhist Era (BE) 2517, a khan year (Year of the Tigher), the fifteenth day of the waning moon of the fourth lunar month, Monday, [the writing was accomplished] at the time of kòng laeng (between 13.30–15.00 o’clock). His Holiness Somdet Pha Sangkharat (Supreme Patriarch) Thammanyana Maha Thera from Vat Mai Souvannaphummara, Luang Prabang, had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this Dhamma script [entitled] Mangkhalasut (Mangala Sutta),, to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May my wishes and desires come true. May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna in the future. Amen, amen!.
