ນິທານທໍາມະບົດ ໃນສະໄໝໜຶ່ງ ພະພຸດທະເຈົ້າປະທັບສໍາລານຢູ່ວັດພະເຊຕະວັນ ເມືອງສາວັດຖີ ໃນຂະນະທີ່ຊົງສະເດັດອອກບິນດະບາດ ເພື່ອໂພດເວໄນຍະສັດຕາມປົກກະຕິ ພະພຸດທະອົງໄດ້ພົບກັບກຸມມານນ້ອຍກຸ່ມໜຶ່ງຢູ່ແຄມທາງກໍາລັງພາກັນຂ້າງູໂຕໜຶ່ງ ພະພຸດທະອົງໄດ້ຕັດຖາມກຸມມານນ້ອຍກຸ່ມນັ້ນວ່າ ພວກເຈົ້າຂ້າງູໂຕນີ້ດ້ວຍເຫດອັນໃດ ກຸມມານນ້ອຍທັງຫລາຍກໍ່ຕອບວ່າ ຂ້າມັນຖິ້ມ ເພາະງູເປັນສິ່ງອັນຕະລາຍແກ່ຊີວິດ ຈາກນັ້ນພະພຸດທະອົງຊົງຕັດທໍາມະເທດສະໜາໃຫ້ໂອວາດຄໍາສັ່ງສອນໃຫ້ແກ່ກຸມມານນ້ອຍທັງຫລາຍ ຊຶ່ງມີໃຈຄວາມວ່າຫ້າມບໍ່ໃຫ້ຂ້າສັດແລະບຽດບຽນຜູ້ອື່ນ ເມື່ອກຸມມານນ້ອຍທັງຫລາຍໄດ້ຟັງພະທໍາມະເທດສະໜາຈົບລົງ ກໍ່ໄດ້ບັນລຸໂສດາບັນທັງໝົດ.
Dhammapada. On one occasion, the Buddha was present at the Jetavana monastery in Savatthi. While he was going for collecting alms in the morning as usual, he met a group of chidren on the side of the road who were killing a snake. The Buddha asked them, why did you kill the snake? The children answered that, we kill it because the snake is dangerous to life. Then the Buddha preached to the children and said that you should not kill animals and harm others. When all the children listened to the sermon, at the end they attained Sotāpana.
