The content tells the story of King Asoka who killed all his older and younger half-brothers and became the king of Pataliputta in BE 218. One day, the king saw Novice Nigrodha who was a noble one with good manner and personality. He called the novice and asked for his preaching. The novice spoke to the king on the teachings of the Buddha, he said, “Heedfulness is the way to the deathless, heedlessness is the way to death.” After listening, the king had the ardent faith in the teaching and converted him to Buddhism since then. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat (CS) 1181, a kot si year, on the fourteenth day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month, a kat sai day, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), the writing was accomplished at noon. Ai Khem and his wife had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Maha Upakhut luang (The great version of Upakupta) to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha, for Vat Xiang Yün, to last until the end of 5000 years.
