Lao customary law on the rules for monks and novices issued by the Patriarch, four ecclesiastical governors and the royal court. For examples, any monks and novices should not seat on the boat along with women. Any monks and novices should not play any music instruments, or cards, taping a bird, and cockfighting. Any monks or novices should not drink intoxicating liguor, smoke opium or hemp. Any monks or novices should not cover ones’ heads in the villages. Any monks or novices should not play firecrackers on the end day of the Buddhist Lent. Colophons: (1) Folio 1 on the recto side: Chunlasakkarat 12235 (corresponding with CS 1235), a ka hao year, the first day of the waxing moon of the third lunar month, the first day of the week (Sunday), a hap khai day, [the writing was accomplished] at the time of kòng laeng (between 13.30–15.00 o’clock). The royal king gave his royal order to three of us to put his royal command on the heads of all ministers that they have to invite the Maha Sangharaja (Supreme Patriarch) and the four clesiastical ministers to promote and set up the rules which lay down by the Buddha for monks and novices.
