The Story of an Old Brahmin. Once, there lived in Savatthi an old brahmin who had eight hundred thousand Kahapana in cash. He had four sons. When each one of the sons got married, he gave one hundred thousand Kahapana to him. Thus, he gave away four hundred thousand Kahapana. Later, his wife died. His sons came to him and looked after him very well; somehow they coaxed him to give them the remaining four hundred thousand Kahapana. Thus, he was left practically penniless. Thereafter, when the old Brahmin stayed with any of his sons, he was kicked out of the house. Thus, the old man became helpless, and then, then, taking a staff and a bowl for begging. One day, he went to the Buddha at the Jetavana monastery for protection and advice. The Buddha told him some verses and advised him to recite them wherever there was a large gathering of people. When his sons heard the Brahmin was reciting the verses, they were afraid of punishment by the people for not raising father. Therefore, they took the Brahmin to their housed and took a good care of him. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat 68 (corresponding with CS 1168), a hwai nyi year.
