The expedition sets out on July 20th, stops briefly in Tenejapa and then goes on to San Gregorio where they spend the night and see the ruins. Discussion about size of landholdings. On the 23rd they go on to the Flores ranch but don't stay as it is too run down but move on despite the rain and onto the Cancuc road some two hours from Tenejapa, where there was a flood and they spent the night in the school. Descriptions of landscape, housing, people, rivers. Image 3 - Page 2 - On the 24th July the festival is in full swing. Trudi returns to San Cristobal and Nabolom with various misadventures enroute with her horse and where there are visitors. While Frans stays on and sees the Saints in procession go around the church plaza. Sunday guests. Image 4 - Page 3 '25th July, Monday'. Nabolom has visitors and the house is full. Where people slept. She and Felix set off for San Andres at 3.00am and are overtaken by Carlota in the 'volteo' (vehicle). Arrive at 8.15. They get to Santiago by 10.30. There is horse racing and in the afternoon the [visiting] Saint (unnamed) and the local Saints are taken out in procession and to the edge of the community. Trudi talks to an Alferez (ex Presidente) who has been to visit the Guadalupana: story about how one of that party bought a tamale only to find a human finger inside. On the 26th, she comments that they spent the night on benches and tables. The horse racing continued and then everyone was given 'guineos' (bananas?)and most people left. Image 5 - page 4 A restful and enjoyable day follows but there are still drunks around. Description of Clothing and of tobacco: 'Pelico con ajo' is good for the stomach. On the 27th, they move on to another community (Santa Marta?) where the saints are undressed in the church and their clothes washed and dried accompanied by drinking and music. A place is prepared for the arrival of the saint. Clothing discussed. Image 6 - Page 5 Description of a request for a Saint from Magdalenas (by means of a letter written by a scribe) and St Marta comes back. 28th Thursday move on to Magdalenas hoping to see the saint set out to Santa Marta but get there too early.
