ຄຳສຸພາສິດ ມີຮາກຖານມາຈາກຄຳສອນຂອງພຸດທະສາສະໜາ ກ່ຽວກັບການກະທຳໃນທາງທີ່ຖືກຕ້ອງ. ນັກປາດອາຈານ ຫຼື ຜູ້ເຖົ້າຜູ້ແກ່ ມັກຈະໃຊ້ຄໍາກອນສຸພາສິດ ເວລາໃຫ້ໂອວາດ ສັ່ງສອນແກ່ລູກສິດແລະລູກຫລານ ເພື່ອໃຫ້ປະພຶດປະຕິບັດຢູ່ໃນຄຸນງາມຄວາມດີ, ມີຄວາມສາມັກຄີ, ຮັກແພງ ແລະຊ່ວຍເຫຼືອເຊິ່ງກັນແລະກັນ. ຄໍາກອນສຸພາສິດແຕ່ລະບົດແຕ່ລະປະໂຫຍກ ມີເນື້ອຫາສາລະອັນເປັນຄໍາສອນແອບແຝງຢູ່ໃນຕົວຂອງມັນເອງ. ຕົວຢ່າງເຊັ່ນ “ສະແລະໜອງນໍ້າ ທີ່ບໍ່ມີນໍ້າ ກໍ່ເບິ່ງບໍ່ງາມ, ຕົ້ນໄມ້ໃຫຍ່ ແຕ່ບໍ່ມີໃບ ກໍ່ເບິ່ງບໍ່ງາມ, ປ່າອັນໃດຫາໄມ້ບໍ່ໄດ້ ກໍ່ເບິ່ງບໍ່ງາມ, ນາລີສາວໜຸ່ມນ້ອຍ ຜູ້ເຫລົ່າງາມ ແຕ່ປາສະຈາກເສື້ອຜ້າ ກໍ່ເບິ່ງບໍ່ງາມ, ແມ່ງົວນົມ ແຕ່ບໍ່ມີນໍ້ານົມ ກໍ່ເບິ່ງບໍ່ງາມ”.

The proverb has its roots in Buddhist teachings about doing the right thing. Scholars or elders often use proverbs when giving advice to their students and children to behave in virtue, to be united, to love and help each other. Each proverb has a hidden teaching content in itself. For example, "A pond without water does not look beautiful, a big tree without leaves does not look beautiful, a forest without wood does not look beautiful, a young girl who is beautiful but without clothes does not look beautiful, a cow without milk does not look beautiful".
