Once upon a time, King Anurutha reigned the kingdom of Marata. The king had the ardent religious faith in the Teachings of the Buddha. He invited Buddhist monks to his palace and offer food to them regularly. One day, when the monks finished meal, the king asked the monks a question, "Venerable Sirs, what kind of almsgiving would be better than giving all those alms?" At the time, a monk who was wise with verses, answered, "Sabba dānaṃ dhama dānaṃ jinati, the gift of the Dharma excels all gifts." When the king heard this, he became even more faithful. So he sent scholars to Lankadipa (Sri Lanka) in order to write down the Dhamma in the palm-leaf manuscripts, which took seven years and seven months to complete. When it was finished, all those scholars built 3 junks to carry the Tipitaka back to the Jambudipa (continent). A junk carried the Abhidhamma manuscripts, another one carried the Vinaya manuscripts and other one carried the Suttanta manuscripts. Colophon: Folio 29 on the recto side: Buddhist Era (BE) 2488, a hap hao year, on the sixth day of the waxing moon of the tenth lunar month, the fourth day of the week (Wednesday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng ngai (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock). The initiators, Saen Mai Thit Onsi and his wife Saen Kaeo from Xiang Maen village sponsored the making of this manuscript entitled Sapao Kham (a gold junk) to dedicate the merit to Thit Ma, Xiang Thongdi, Sao Chanpheng and Xiang Tan. May the results of this merit move them to a good place, if they are alreasy in a good place, may they be better than ever by one hundred and one hudren thousand times, and to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May our desires and wishes come true. Xiang Maen village, Vat Xiang Yuen temple.
