On one occasion, the Buddha was residing at the Jetavana monastery. At the time, King Pasenadi along with his ministers and followers approached the presence of the Buddha and asked him that "My Blessed One, when I will do giving alms, what kind of action is considered excellent? What kind of action is considered to be excellent when I will observe the precepts?" What kind of action is considered to be excellent when I will listen to the Dhamma preaching? And giving alms, observing the precepts, listening to the Dharma, which actions will have more blessings? The Buddha said that, “His Majesty, there are three kinds of giving, three kinds of observing the precepts and three kinds of listening to dharma as well. Then, the Buddha gave the sermon to the king and his followers in detail.
