Visuddhimagga refers to the path of purity is the scripture that explains the principles of practice that lead to Nirvana based on the principles of the morality, meditation and wisdom. The original was written in Pali by an Indian Buddhist teacher, Buddhagosa in Lanka. The text of this fascicle tells about the five jhana (absorption) factors which consist of the first absorption, the second absorption, the third absorption, the fourth absorption, and the fifth absorption. The first absorption has five factors including vitakka (initial application), vicara (sustained application), piti (joy), sukkha (happiness), and ekaggata (one-poitedness). The second absorption has four factors including vicara (sustained application), piti (joy), sukkha (happiness), and ekaggata (one-poitedness). The third absorption has three factors including piti (joy), sukkha (happiness), and ekaggata (one-poitedness). The fourth absorption has two factors including sukkha (happiness), and ekaggata (one-poitedness). The fifth absorption has two factors including upekkha (equanimity), ekaggata (one-poitedness).
