Naraka was born in a Brahmin clan in Kapilavatthu. His mother was the younger sister of Asita ascetic who was the teacher of King Suddhodana. Once, Asita had prophesied Siddhartha that he would definitely become a Buddha. The ascetic then told his nephew, Naraka to be ordained as an ascetic and wait until Siddhartha attains enlightenment and then came to ask for Monaiyavat practice from him. Naraka followed his uncle’s advice. He became an ascetic practiced perseverance until he achieved the eightfold attainment. When the Buddha arose, Naraka ascetic came to the Buddha and was ordained as a monk. Thereafter, he asked the Buddha for Monaiya. The Buddha gave him the Monaiya practice in four verses including do not collect alms at the same place, do not sleep at the same place, do not judge who is good or bad, and do not consider whether this place rough or fishy. After that, Venerable Naraka took his leave of the Buddha to the mountain and held on to that practice of Monaiya strictly until he attained arahantship. Maha Titsapannya is the scribe and Maha Chittapannya sponsord the palm leaves, jointly sponsord the making of this manuscript entitled Monaiyavat. May we all attain the four noble truths and obtain sodamakkha, sodaphala, sakkithakhamakkha, sakkithakhaphala, anakhamakkha, anakhaphala, arahantamakkha, arahantaphala. To last until the end of 5000 years. Sudinnaṃ vatta me dānaṃ nibbānaṃ paranaṃ sukhaṃ (May the alms that I have already given be a condition to reach Nibbāna which is the greatest bliss).
