During the sevan days after the passing away of the Buddha, the kings of Mala worshiped with incense, flowers and all kinds of musical instruments in Kusinara for seven days. After that, a fire ceremony was held. The kings of Mala asked about how to treat the Buddha’s body from Venerable Ananda and followed the Venerable’s advice. But when it was time to burn the Buddha’s body that was not burning, the kings of Mala became suspicious, so they inquired about the cause with Venerable Anuruddha Thera. The Venerable explained that the angels want to wait for Venerable Maha Kassapa and other 500 monks who were on their way to offer their paying homage to the Buddha’s body before the fire would burn. When Venerable Maha Kassapa Thera and other 500 monks arrived and paid homage to the Buddha’s body, the fire burned itself without anyone lighting it. Colophons: (1) Folio 2 on the recto side: Buddhist Era (BE) 2494, a tao si year, the tenth day of the waxing moon of the third lunar month, the third day of the week (Tuesday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng laeng (between 13.30–15.00 o’clock). Somana (Monk) Nissapannya from Vat That had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Phasuthtasanasut or Phaphutthanipphan to prolong the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. Due to this gift of mine, may my wishes and desires come true. On the other hand, may I be free from suffering of the round of rebirths. Moreover, may I obtain magga (the path) and phala (the fruition). May the results of the merit that I have already performed, support me through this life and the future lives. May I be reborn in the heaven and enter Nibbāna that is the crystal city of Nibbāna. May my wishes be fulfilled definitely. (2) Folio 22 on the verso side: Sathu Nyai (Abbot) of Vat That Luang is the scribe. 1952. Missing, overwriting, mistake somewhere, please correct it for me, dear all.
