The Dhammapada story of Venerable Maha Kassapa. On one occasion, while Venerable Mahakassapa was staying at Pipphali cave in Rajagaha, he spent his time developing the mental image of light (aloka kasina) and trying to find out through divine vision, beings who were mindful and beings who were negligent, also those who were about to die and those who were about to be born. From the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha saw through his divine vision what Venerable Mahakassapa was doing and wanted to warn him that he was wasting his time. So he sent forth his radiance and appeared seated before the Venerable and exhorted him thus: "My son Kassapa, the number of births and deaths of beings is innumerable and cannot be counted. It is not your concern to count them; it is the concern only of the Buddhas." Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Chanthathimat sangkat 173 (corresponding with CS 1173), a ma mae year (year of the Goat), on the eighth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month. His majesty the king of Sisattanakharahutta Nusuvannaphumintha kingdom had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript for prosperity. May this be a condition for us to reach Nibbāna certainly.
