The Dhammapada story of Venerable Culapandaka. At one time, the Buddha was dwelling at the Veluvana monastery in Rajagaha. Two brother monks, elder named Mahapandak and younger named Culapandaka. Venerable Mahapandaka attained arahantship shortly after the ordination. Venerable Culapandaka was blockish; he could not even memorize one verse. This is due to his evil action in a previous life that he travestied a monk who was blockish. The Buddha gave a clean while piece of cloth to Culapandaka and told him to sit and rub the cloth with his hand. At the same time, he was to repeat the word “Rajoharanam”. Very soon, the cloth became soiled. Seeing this change in the condition of the cloth, Culapandaka came to realise the impermanent nature of all conditioned things. The Buddha delivered a sermon to Culapandaka by explaining the meaning of the soiled cloth and lust, hatre and delude. Culapandaka got the message and attained arahantship.
