Batismos de Escravos e Livres, 1871-1883

This volume contains baptismal records of enslaved children born prior to the "Free Womb" Law of 28 Sep 1871, as well as to children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of the law and free people, recorded in the Church of São Gonçalo do Amarante. Entries date from 11 Jun 1871 to 15 Aug 1883. The opening charter was signed on 20 Jun 1871 by Vicar João Ferreira Goulart and by the Municipal Judge of the Province, Luis Mathos (?) da Camara, on 28 Jun 1871. The closing charter was isgned on 22 Jun 1871 by Castro Viana and on 28 Jun 1871 by the Municipal Judge of the Province, Luis Mathos(?) da Camara, who rubriced all of the folios of the volume. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar João Ferreira Goulat e Padre Paulo d'Estibayre(?). Entries appear out of chronological order; folios 17v through 49v are blank. A single entry appears on folio 50f. A record relating to burials and brotherhoods, dated 1911, appears on folio 17f. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 50 numbered folios in a good state of conservation. It has a cover. Dimensions: 40cm x 27cm.
