Batismos de Escravos, Forros, Índios e Livres, 1804-1826

The volume records baptisms of slaves, freed (forro/liberto), indigenous (índios ) and free people registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, Saquarema-RJ. Entries date from 25 Jul 1804 through 26 Dec 1826. The volume does not include opening or closing charters. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Miguel Gomes Torres; Commissioned Vicar Antonio Gomes Dias; Interim Vicar João Ignacio de Santa Roza; Vicar José de Santanna Costa; Vicar José Pinto Pinheiro; Father José Victorino de Souza. Among the individuals who appear in the volume are natives (naturais) of Rio Bonito; Maricá; Itaboraí; Santo Antonio de Sá; Campos dos Goytacazes; and Ilha do Pico. Some of the baptisms took place in private chapels located on plantations, such as that of Captain João da Silva Ribeiro; some of the baptisms were performed by chaplains like José Francisco de Carvalho. The volume also records baptisms of children of freed (liberto/forro) individuals and numerous manumissions at the baptismal font ("alforrias de pia.") A pastoral visit on 02 Aug 1812 by Visitor Barboza is included in the volume. Numerous entries record the names of the baptized child's grandparents. African "nations" and ethnonyms mentioned: Angola and Benguela. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 365 folios (beginning on folio 6, and including some unnumbered pages) that have come loose from the binding.
