Collection of Bilingual Texts I

Transliterated title: Kandoolu Kitaaboolu I.

Contains a bilingual Arabic-Mandinka Ajami collection of numerous documents, including personal correspondences, healing and divination techniques, recipes to address multiple local preoccupations using figures and formulas (including how to increase one’s cattle and how to discipline an enemy), a guide for prayers and marriage, and different types of prayers, including Mandinka incantations and other specialized bilingual Arabic-Mandinka Ajami prayers. The materials reflect the dual literacy tradition in Arabic and Ajami that is common in Muslim Africa. Classical Arabic knowledge alone is not sufficient to make sense of these documents. One needs dual literacy in classical Arabic and Mandinka Ajami in order to decipher the contents of many of these documents.
