"Pu M. Suaka Lal, Pi Chhingtei BW. Pi L. Veli Lalnu. Durtlang [1938]"

The photograph shows Chief M. Suaka of Durtlang, along with his family, in front of their Durtlang bungalow, which still stands to this day. They are all holding what surely are Bibles, perhaps as a symbol of their new, Christian identity. Pu Suaka was one of the earliest converts among Lushai chiefs. It seems this photo was cropped in those days to create a profile picture for Pu Suaka (see EAP454_Zokhuma_85). It should be noted that M. Suaka was not a chief in the traditional, hereditary sense; to the contrary, he was appointed and raised to chieftainship by the colonial state.

One photograph, measuring 80mm x 103mm.
