Maharāt (Mahārāja) the eleventh episode of a total of 13 episodes of the Vessantara Jataka with 69 verses. Maharāt means the great king, the content tells Jujaka took the two children Jali and Kanha to his hometown in Kalinga. At the night, he cribbed and slept on the tree, while the two children were bound to the trunk. However deities took the shapes of Vessantara and Maddi to nurture and protect them. On the coming morning they continued their journey, but Jujaka lost the way and directed to Sivi which was the city of King Sanjaya, the grandfather of the two children. When King Sonjaya saw his grandchildren, he was so overjoyed and ransomed the two young princes from Jujaka. The king also fed Jujaka with delicious food. With hungriness for many days, Jujaka overate. Finally his bloated stomach with indigestion was broken out and then he died. Colophon: Folio 22 on the recto side: Chunlasangkatrasa (CS) 1292, a hwai sanga year, on the sixth day of the waxing moon of the ninth lunar month, the fifth day of the week (Thursday), a hap sai day, the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng laeng (between 13.30–15.00 o’clock). Chao Phanya Maha Somdet Sisavang Vong and his first wife Queen Khamfan jointly had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript-bundle entitled Vohān Vetsantara (Vessantara in phrase) to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May all our desires and wishes with Nirvana as the ultimate goal, come true. May the results of this merit support Thu Nyai Thangthai (mean Queen Kham Ouan, King Sisavang Vong’s 1st wife) who already died to the other world. May she reach the states of happiness. If she has been in a good place, may this merit reach her. May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvana.
