The Dhammapada story of Erakapatta the Naga King. On one occasion, while residing near Baranasi the Buddha spoke about Erakapatta, a king of nagas. In one of his past existences during the time of Kassapa Buddha, the naga had been a bhikkhu, he had accidentally caused a grass blade to be broken off while travelling in a boat on the Ganga river. The monk had failed to do the act of exoneration as prescribed. As he thought it was a minor offence. After death, he was reborn as the naga. He was waiting the appearance of a Buddha for asking for help. On seeing the Buddha, Erakapatta related to the story of his previous life. After hearing him, the Buddha told the naga that “Your Majesty, to be a human being is very difficult; the appearance of the Buddhas and to listen to the Buddha’s preaching are also very difficult as well. These three things are difficult to achieve for a person”.
