The Dhammapada story of a certain monk. One day, a brahmin from Savatthi put his upper garment outside his house to air it. An arahant found that garment as he was going back to the monastery. Thinking that it was a piece of cloth thrown away by someone and therefore ownerless, so, the monk picked it up. The brahmin saw the monk picking up the piece of clothing and came after him, and reclaimed the garment. The monk promptly returned the piece of clothing to the brahmin. Back at the monastery, the Venerable related the story to other bhikkhus, and they made fun of him and jokingly asked him whether the cloth was long or short, coarse or fine. To this question the thera answered, "Whether the clothing is long or short, coarse or fine matters not to me; I am not at all attached to it." Other bhikkhus then reported to the Buddha. The Buddha said, "Bhikkhus! The monkspeaks the truth; an arahat does not take anything that is not given him." Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat 172 (corresponding with CS 1172), a kot sanga year, the seventh day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month, and a kap chai day. The royal king of Sisattanakhanahutta kingdom had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Thambot (Dhammapada) to support the Teachings of the Buddha.
