The Dhammapada story of Samanera (Novice) Samkicca. Novice Samkicca was only seven years old but he attained arahatship. On one occasion, the novice companied in a group of thirty bhikkhus practicing meditation in the forest. At that time, the novice was arrested by five hundred robbers for making an offering to the guardian spirits of the forest. When was the time of sacrifice, the leader of the robbers lifted his sword and struck hard at the novices neck, who was seating with his mind fixed on jhana concentration. But the blade of the sword curled up without cutting the flesh. Seeing this strange happening, the leader of the robbers dropped his sword, knelt at the feet of the novice and asked his pardon. Later, all the five hundred robbers were ordained as novices by Novice Samkicca. The novice accompanied by five hundred new novices went to pay respect to Venerable Sariputta, his teacher, at the Jetavana monastery. Then the Venerable took them all to pay homage to the Buddha. When told what had happened, the Buddha said, "Bhikkhus, if you rob or steal and commit all sorts of evil deeds, your life would be useless, even if you were to live a hundred years. Living a virtuous life even for a single day is much better than a hundred years of a life of depravity”.
