The Dhammapada story of Cittahatthat Thera. A man from Savatthi, after looking for his lost ox in the forest, felt very hungry and went to a village monastery, where he was given the remains of the morning meal. While taking his food, it occurred to him, “even though I worked hard every day I could not get such good food and that it might be a good idea to become a bhikkhu”. So he was ordained as a monk. After some time, he got weary of going round for alms-food and returned to the life of a lay man. A few days later, he felt that life at home was too strenuous and he went back to the monastery to be admitted as a bhikkhu. He went to the monastery and returned to a lay man for six times. Other bhikkhus gave him a name of Cittahattha means one who is under the power of mind. Few days after his seventh ordination, he attained arahatship. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat 168 (corresponding with CS 1168), a hwai nyi year, on the second day of the waxing moon of the fourth lunar month, the third day of the week (Tuesday). The writing of this manuscript was accomplished in late afternoon (between 15.00–16.30 o’clock). The royal king had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Preaching Dhammapada to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna.
