Dhammapada on Venerable Mahapala or Cakkhupala who seriously practiced in meditation and determined himself that he would not sleep. He exercised in the standing, walking and sitting only. When he had practiced like that for three months, he had a problem with his eyes. The tear came down from his both eyes. When the other monks saw that they asked a local healer to treat the Mahapala’s eyes. The Venerable accepted the healing but he did accept to lie down for healing. Finally, the doctor cancelled his healing. The venerable continued his practice in the same way. One day at majjhimayama (between 22.00–2.00 o’clock), the sightless and enlightenment happened to the Venerable. Therefore, he attained enlightenment as a seer of light in the dark. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat 167 (corresponding with CS 1167), a hap pao year, the thirteenth day of the waxing moon of the first lunar month, the second day of the week (Monday), and a kot mao day.
