The Buddha delivered this Nibbāna Sutta to his followers while staying at the Jetavanna Monastery in Savatthi. The content describes about the making of merit including alms-giving, observing precepts, listening to Dhamma preaching, and meditating. In there, the observing precepts are the initial way to enter Nirvana. Only giving alms but not observing precepts, after death, can be born as a ghost like the story of a couple millionaires. The result of sponsoring the making of, or writing this manuscript and offering it to the Sangha can support the ghosts to be born in a good place in heavens. Colophon: Folio 25 on the recto side: In Buddhist Era 2488, a hap hao year, on the third day of the waning moon of the ninth lunar month, the seventh day of the week (Saturday) a hwai nyi day, the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng ngai (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock). Chan Phan from Nakham village together with his children had the ardent religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Nipphannasut to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. I am Chan Phan, may the results of this merit support my wife named Sao Kham who already died to the other world. Even if she has been stuck in a misery place, may the results of this merit support her to be removed from the misery place, and moved to a good place. If she has been already in a good place, may she be better than ever by one hundred and one thousand times, ten thousand and one hundred thousand times by the power of this merit, definitely. Nibbāna paccayo hontu no (May this be a condition for us to reach Nibbāna).
