The National Historical Museum's mission is to generate in visitors a reflection on the identity of Uruguayans and to publicize the multiple historical processes that led to the formation of the country. It seeks to focus its efforts on enhancing and accessing its heritage with the aim of contributing to democratization and social participation. The Institution must promote educational actions tending to develop the responsibility of Uruguayans over their heritage to enjoy it, increase it and preserve it for the next generations and project it towards all peoples in the key of cultural multiversity.

El Museo Histórico Nacional tiene como misión generar en los visitantes una reflexión a propósito de la identidad de los uruguayos y dar a conocer los múltiples procesos históricos que condujeron a la formación del país. Busca centrar sus esfuerzos en la puesta en valor y en acceso de su acervo con el objetivo de contribuir a la democratización y la participación social. La Institución debe promover acciones educativas tendientes a desarrollar la responsabilidad de los uruguayos sobre su patrimonio para disfrutarlo, acrecentarlo y preservarlo para las próximas generaciones y proyectarlo hacia todos los pueblos en clave de multiversidad cultural.

Custodial history: The National Historical Museum's collection is constantly growing. The library acquires material, receives donations and exchanges titles. Many of the materials that make up its newspaper collection have been donated by individuals trusting in the protection and storage that the Institution can provide. The Museum's collections come from donations made by individuals and institutions. The case of the newspaper is no exception.

Arrangement: Starting in the 1940s, the Museo Histórico Nacional began to diversify its collection and broaden its objectives as a cultural, educational, and research institution. In addition to historical objects and works of art, documents and books began to be acquired through donations or purchase. For the cataloging and ordering of the collections, standard cataloging and classification norms have been used. The collection is inventoried and cataloged according to AACR2.
