Aims and objectives

This project aims to digitize a collection of Uruguayan newspapers published in Montevideo during the 19th century and the first part of the 20th.

• The River Plate Times (1889- 1890)

• The Montevideo Times (1891-1933)

• El Comercio del Plata (1845-1850)

• Le Patriote Français: journal commercial, littéraire et politique (1843-1850)

The selected periodicals are indispensable to study periods of the political, economic, social and cultural history of Uruguay and the River Plate region. They inform about a past that constitutes the basis of this country and of the complex stages prior to its political independence and cultural consolidation.

Outcomes

According to the initial purposes, thanks to the generous auspices of the EAP Project, it was possible to rescue the collections of Uruguayan important newspapers from the 19th century and part of the 20th century, which are at risk of progressive deterioration. By applying the appropriate technological procedures for their careful digitization and conservation, the initial objectives proposed were successfully achieved.

It was necessary to preserve and to make known these collections by digitizing them so that they become permanently and free accessible, both in the region and beyond continental borders, thus enabling the acquisition of information necessary for the better and greater development of indispensable knowledge. To achieve these purposes, it was a fruitful experience to build a scanner suitable for digitizing large format newspapers such as: The Montevideo Times, The River Plate Times, Comercio del Plata and Le Patriote Français, an initiative that will continue to result in permanent use by Anaforas team and a considerable benefit for Uruguay. This equipment will reside in the National Historical Museum.
