Al-Arz (The Cedars): Established on October 15, 1895 in Jounieh by martyred brothers Philippe and Farid Qaadan Al-Khazen under the rule of Muzaffar Pasha, Al-Arz was the daily newspaper of the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate. Under the motto of “Lebanon First”, it mainly advocated Lebanon’s rights, thus earning its fame among the local and expatriate communities and incurring the wrath of Mutasarrifs. When the Young Turks (Turkiya Al-Fatat) Movement reinstated the [Ottoman] constitution and overthrew the government of [Sultan] Abdul Hamid, a group of Lebanese men started lobbying the Mutasarrif to have Lebanon included under his rule. Al-Arz spearheaded the opposition to this line of thought, writing several articles detailing its dangers and mobilizing public opinion against it, thus acquiring tremendous fame. Around 1910, Al-Arz owners Philippe and Farid Al-Khazen halted its publication and took to translating into Arabic 19th-century political and diplomatic documents in the shape of pamphlets mainly on guaranteeing the autonomy and privileges of Mount Lebanon. This stoked the Young Turks’ hatred and animosity, and they grew increasingly opposed to translating political pamphlets into Arabic and publishing such content… On June 6, 1916, brothers Farid and Philippe Al-Khazen were among those martyred by [Ottoman military ruler] Jamal Pasha out of loyalty to the nation.
"الأرز": جريدة متصرفيّة لبنان اليوميّة، أنشئت في 15 تشرين الأوّل 1895. أسّسها الشهيدان فيليب قعدان الخازن وأخوه فريد (في جونيه) على عهد مظفّر باشا. كان شعارها "لبنان أوّلًا"، وأهمّ أهدافها المدافعة عن حقوق لبنان، فنالت شهرة في الوطن والمهجر، وتعرّضت من جرّاء ذلك لنقمة المتصرّفِين. عندما قامت جمعيّة تركيا الفتاة وقلبت حكومة عبد الحميد وأعلنت الدستور، نهضت فئة من رجال لبنان وجعلت تضغط على المتصرّف لإدخال لبنان تحت لوائه. تصدّت لها جريدة "الأرز" وكتبت المقالات المسهبة مبيّنة أضرار هذا المذهب وأخطاره، فتحوّل الرأي العام عنه وكانت لها بذلك شهرة كبيرة. ونحو سنة 1910، أوقف جريدةَ "الأرز" صاحباها (فريد وفيليب) وانصرفا إلى تعريب المحرّرات السياسيّة التي هي وثائق ديبلوماسيّة وسياسيّة عن القرن التاسع عشر تركّز على ضمان استقلاليّة الجبل اللبنانيّ وامتيازاته. كلّ ذلك كان يحزّ في قلب رجال تركيا الفتاة ويثير حقدهم، وزادت في نقمتهم ترجمة المحرّرات السياسيّة إلى العربيّة، وفيها ما لا يروق لهم نشره... وفي 6 حزيران 1916، استُشهِد فريد الخازن إلى جانب أخيه فيليب على أعواد المشانق، على يد جمال باشا السفّاح في سبيل الإخلاص للوطن.
