Once upon a time, King Brahmadata reigned the kingdom of Varanasi. He had two consorts named Chanthadevi and Chamkhamdevi. Both of queens did not have sons, so they gave alms and observed the precepts and prayed to the gods for children. Later, Chanthadevi dreamed that “there was a bright sun floating around Mount Meru three times and fell on her chest”. As for Chamkhamdevi, she dreamed that “Indra brought her a gold moon flower”. So both narrated their dreams to the king. The king invited a royal fortune-teller to prophesy. The fortune-teller prophesied that “Chanthadevi would have a smart son with merit power and would rule the city as a great king in succession to him. While Chamkham would have a beautiful daughter. Thus, Chamkham got jealous and together with commander-in-chief named Pālaka. They accused Chanthadevi of having an adulterous affair and the child in her womb was not his child. The king believed and expelled Chanthadevi from the kingdom. She went to live with two gardener grandparents and gave birth to a son who became a Conch or Suvanana Sangkha. When the Bodhisatta grew up, he took his mother back to Varanasi. When the king knew the truth, he drove Pālaka and Chamkham out of the city and gave the royal crown to Suvanana Sangkha as the ruler of the city.
