The Dhammapada story of Godhika Thera. On one occasion, Godhika Thera was diligently practising Tranquillity and Insign Development on a stone slap on the Isigili mountain. When he had achieved one-poitedness of the mind (jhana) he became very ill. Bat every time he was making some progress he was overcomed by sickness. He was thus inflicted for six times. Finally, he made up his mind to overcome all obstacles and attain arahatship, he decided to give up his life by cutting his throat; at the point of death he attained arahatship. When Mara learned that he assumed the likeness of a young man approached the Buddha and enquired where the Thera was. The Buddha replied to him, "It will be of no benefit to you to learn of the destination of Thera Godhika; for having been freed of moral defilements he became an arahat." Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat 173 (corresponding with CS 1173), a huang mot year, on the eighth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month. His majesty the king of Sisattanakharahutta Nusuvannaphumintha kingdom had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Thambot (Dhammapada) for the prosperity of the Teachings of the Buddha.
