Image (melong) size 77.5 x 54cm. Central figure of Buddha Shakyamuni. Finely detailed and in very good condition overall with some paint loss due to creasing. Perhaps 100-120 years old. . Creation dates: Early 20th Century. Custodial history: An object donated to Dolma Ling nunnery by Buchen Gyurme. It belonged to one of three Lama Manipa who had fled from Tibet and who continued to perform within the exile Tibetan communities in India and Nepal. These manipa were Buchen Gyurme (Wylie ’Gyur med), Buchen Norgye (Wylie Nor rgyas), and Buchen Passang (Wylie Pa sangs) This thangka is the same painting as the one photographed by Clare Harris in Mussoorie in 1984. Buchen Gyurme is depicted performing in this photograph. (Harris, C., In the Image of Tibet. Tibetan Painting after 1959 London 1999. p 105) However the same thangka is also depicted in two family photographs of Buchen Norgye and Ani Buchen Passang Dolma so it probably originally belonged to them and was later loaned or gifted to their friend Buchen Gyurme. Extent and format of original material: One narrative scroll painting / thangka. Owner(s) of original material: Dolma Ling Nunnery.
