Digitisation of select 78 RPM gramophone records: rare Bengali songs and drama of the mid-twentieth century (1920-1950) (EAP1611)

Aims and objectives

The Nazrul Centre for Social and Cultural Studies at Kazi Nazrul University in Asansol, West Bengal has recently procured almost four thousand 78RPM Shellac Records, produced by various companies between 1902 to 1950, from the descendants of a famous collector, the late Surajlal Mukhopadhyay of Kolkata. Most of these records date between 1920-1950. EAP1611 will digitise and preserve select modern Bengali song recordings of various genres which are creations of Kazi Nazrul Islam and his contemporary lyricists, music composers and singers as well as some Bengali audio drama that were extremely popular forms of entertainment throughout the middle of the twentieth century.
