Phra Khamphan Phatthathammo [1968]

Sathou Nyai Khamphan Phatthathammo, Abbot of Vat Khom Khouang, at the age of 46 in 1968.The CV of Sathou Nyai Khamphan PhatthathammoSathou Nyai Khamphan Phatthathammo, Abbot of Vat Khom Khouang. He was born on Monday 12th November in C.E. 1922, corresponds to the 2nd day of waxing moon of the 12th month of Lao calendar in B.E. 2465 at Khok Va Village, Pha Khom Group, Luang Prabang District & Province. He is the fourth son of Mr. Thid Keo and Mrs. Khamsao Sengmany, who had eight childrens:1. Mr. Thit Oune,2. Ms. On,3. Ms. Ouan4. Sathou Nyai Khamphan Phatthathammo,5. Mr. Manh,6. Mr. Lonh,7. Ms. Thongsay,8. Mr. Thid Pheng....His four brothers and three sisters had already died, but Sathou Nyai Khamphan Phatthathammo had just passed away in 2006. At his seven years old, Sathou Nyai Khamphan had studied at Pha Khom Primary School, and he was named Phan Sengmany until he finished the big second year or the fifth year. At his 12 years old, he had ordained to be a novice at Vat Khok Va to study Dhamma, Tham-scripts, Pali, chanting and giving sermons with his monk teachers until he was 21 years old, he had ordained to be a monk at Vat Khok Va, which had Sathou Nyai Phan Phothipanyo of Vat Khom Khouang was his preceptor, Sathou Nyai Oune Inthapanyo of Vat Tao Hai was his right-hand prayer and Sathou Nyai Phoummy of Vat Ban Done was his left-hand prayer with 30 monks attending the ceremony, finished ceremony at 15: 15 pm on Tuesday the 11th day of waxing moon of the 6th month of Lao calendar in B.E. 2487, corresponds to the 2nd May in C.E. 1944.Because of he was very diligent and strong, therefore he had sought how to practice Vipassana, study Buddhism and gain knowledge for himself all the time. When he had ordain to be a monk for a while, he moved to live at Vat Phou Xang, which is now called Vat Pa where there is a crematorium to hold cremation ceremony, he moved to there for study and practice Vipassana (insight meditation), Parivassakam (ritual retreat of purification), practice Rookkhamol (staying under the tree) and practice Thoudong (the thirteen practices of ascetic monks) in the forest. He also studied magic formula because he was a brave monk, but he had never forgotten to study Buddhism. He had studied Phra Pariyattitham (Dhamma scriptures) and he had got the Bachelor of Dhamma Scholar.Sathou Nyai Khamphan was deeply believed in the teaching of the Buddha that doing good will receive good, therefore, Sathou Nyai Khamphan paid attention to preserve, maintain and build main hall of temple and other temple buildings in Pha Khom Group because this village group is his mother land of his hometown, he also made coffins for the deaths for Buddhist Sangha and lay people, he also gave advice how to make cremation ceremony for them. He had spent all his life to build the main hall and other buildings in many temples in Luang Prabang and other provinces until the end of his life; he had led monks and novices of Vat Mai Suvannaphoumaram and lay people of Ban Pa Kham to maintain the roof of the main hall of Vat Mai Suvannaphoumaram. He had led monks, novices and lay people of Meuang La District, Oudomsay Province to build the main hall of Vat Phra Singkham. Beside these, he had also been a chief monk to build main hall of many temples a long Nam Ou River, Nam Cheuang River, Nam Khan River and the Mekong. Wherever he had been to build the main hall of temples or making merit he had given sermon and preaching Dhamma to monks, novices and lay people. Whenever he had talked Dhamma with monks, novices and lay people, especially elder people he did not want to sleep, sometimes he had talked Dhamma with monks, novices and lay people until dawn. Some lay people said that when Sathou Nyai Khamphan touched his face gently for three times, it means that Sathou Nyai Khamphan did not sleep in that night. Sathou Nyai Khamphan had built many temple buildings, and he had strictly practiced in Buddhism, therefore many monks, novices and lay people prayed respect to him, and nominated him to be the abbot of Vat Khom Khouang in 1962 until the end of his life in 2006, and he was nominated to be a chief monk of Buddhist Sangha of Pha Khom Group until Laos had liberated and established to be the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in 1975, the he was nominated to be a member of the Buddhist Sangha of Luang Prabang and he was nominated to be an advisor for the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organization. When he was 80 years old, he had been very ill, he had hurt his lung until 2005, but his ill was not recovered, therefore monks, novices who are his pupils and his relatives had taken care of him in Laos and Thailand, but he was not recovered. He passed way at 4:30 am on 3rd April, 2006 at his private room at Vat Khom Khouang. He was 84 years old with 4 months and 21 days. He had been a monk for 62 years.
